His lyrics define himself for who he is, only rapping about what he knows or what he has been through separates him from the large crowd of artist coming out of Columbus, Ohio. What does TIOBS mean to you?
”TIOBS is much more than some clever word on a t-shirt. Its a psychological movement that focuses on self-determination + self-education + self-initiative; three strong keywords that were specifically picked to create motivation, dedication, and inspiration. I believe we all are great in are own ways. Its up to you to get up and go out and find your “It” and do it to your fullest potential. Because even though greatness is in us all, it’s earned. TIOBS is a way of life, an outlook on society for success; positivity is the key but first you got to believe in yourself and be yourself.”
Any last words?
Yea, if you Rep TIOBS there’s no turning back. You must succeed.

Who is Doug C.?
“My Name is Douglas Campbell and I would like to start by thanking my good friend Brad Cubbie for introducing me to the movement/concept and TIOBS giving me an opportunity to share a little about me with you all. I am originally from Salisbury NC, but I’m currently living in Rio Grande, OH. I was fortunate to grow up with a mother and father in my life and I also have younger brother Darrius who is 19. I didn’t have the worse situation growing up but it definitely wasn’t the best but my parents made a way for us. Growing up in Salisbury has made me everything I am today, I have lost friends to jail and to the streets, but seeing things like this happen really kept me on a straight and narrow path and made me want to make it out of “da bury” as we would say. Sports, mostly basketball has had a huge influence on my life because it gave me a choice to either strive towards something or choose the streets and with being involved in them it didn’t give me the time to be out on the block. I always had a goal to play collegiate basketball so that really pushed me and helped me build a determined mindset which ultimately helped me accomplish my goal. I played 4 years at the University of Rio Grande and got the chance a lot of people don’t get and I am very appreciative of that.”
What do you do now?
“I am currently working as a financial aid advisor at the Univ of Rio Grande and working towards obtaining my masters in Sports culture with a Concentration in athletic leadership. I graduated with my bachelors in spring of 2011. After school I do plan to pursue playing professional basketball overseas if the opportunity still presents itself.”
What do you care about most in the world (excluding family and friends)?
”A couple things that I really care about is for one; people really striving to get the most out of themselves and pushing to be the best “U” that you can be. This is partly why I really feel in love with this TIOBS movement because of self fulfillment. Being positive and willing to help others is another thing I feel strongly about. I believe we have to reach out and be willing to help the next person because you never know what somebody can become with a little encouragement and positivity. That’s what I think TIOBS is doing with this movement, presenting the idea of being somebody and then having a person to share it and spread it!”
What do you wish to do in the future?
”At the end of the day I want to have a profession in which I can help encourage and motivate people on the daily basis. I always thought that having at least one person tell me I helped change their life before I leave this earth was a great goal to set for myself and hopefully I can make that happen.”
Any final words to leave us with?
“No one on this earth is PERFECT, but it does not take a PERFECT person to be positive and attempt their goals with PERFECT effort. Cause at the end of the day PERFECT effort is just YOU doing the best that YOU can do!!”
Tiffany R. Smith Part II
What do you wish to do in the future?
In my future I just want to be a part of something that I care deeply about. Something that if the position had no pay, I would still be willing to work for it. I want to have a career in something within the social justice and educational arena. I wouldn’t mind working with inner-city youth or being a college professor or author. But honestly at this point in my life, I am 22 and have no clue what life has in store for, but who does? I am just excited about the journey and I am really just chasing my passions. If the passion is there, everything else will fall in place.
Any final words to leave us with?
As a member of the TIOBS© team I just hope that people understand that this movement is not about a t- shirt or publicity. I hope they know that that there is a team of people coming together to be brilliant, and inturn makes other brilliant also. People who are all great in their own right. The people working behind The Idea of Being Somebody wants YOU to be better. It is not about us (the team) it is about us as a community, all trying to make one another better. Don’t wait anymore to be a better you.
Who is Tiffany?
I am Tiffany R. Smith. I was born and raised in Dayton, Ohio. I have lived in the Desota Bass projects my whole life (my mother still lives their currently). Even though I grew up in a bad neighborhood, I was fortunate enough to attend two great schools; the Dayton View Academy and the Dayton Early College Academy (DECA). Living in a tough neighborhood, yet going to schools where the teachers cared gave me the best of both worlds. I was able to go through struggle which allowed me to be humble, grateful, to struggle and to know pain. However, through my schools and teachers I was able to experience hope, persistence, positivity, and the belief that I was special and could make it out of my situation. My teachers and coaches saved me from who knows what. My teachers instilled dreams and ideas in me that I can never repay.
From this place I now stand as a Bowling Green State University student on my way out to graduation. I am a first generation college student. I also laid the foundation for my sister to follow and she is also a student here at BGSU. Here at BGSU I am a student and a leader trying my best to improve the community around me.
What do you do now?
I am now a student. I am a leader. I am very much involved in the Black Student Union (BSU) here at BGSU. I am a Diversity Peer Educator. I am also the Vice President of an organization on campus called H.U.E. Similarly, I am a Ronald E. McNair Scholar which is a program to help underrepresented student pursue their Ph.D. Currently I am preparing the next phase in my life which is graduate school. I am also a proud member of the TIOBS© team.
What do you care about most in the world (excluding family and friends)?
What I care about most in the world is community. Not community in the sense of where you live, but the community that is defined as “a unified body of individuals”. The shared thoughts, livelihoods, and well-being that we all share as a human community. I care about how much we care for one another. I believe that if people can believe in one another and support each other the world would be better for all of us, no matter race, religion, sexuality, or financial status. That is the strongest thing that there is to me. If everyone can understand that what you do directly and indirectly affects everyone around you, we would be more conscious of what we do and say to ourselves and one another.
I care deeply for human justice and civil rights. As an African American, I’ve read and witnessed injustices. I believe that though I struggle there are others struggling as well and it is my job to stand up for those oppressed groups that I do not belong to. Rev. Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. said it best, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” I believe it is our right and duty to stand up for anyone who does not receive equal treatment no matter if you are a part of that group or not. And it is not based solely on race, religion, or the typical oppressed groups. It is anyone who is marginalized. We have to stand up for one another. If I do not stand for others, how can I expect anyone to stand up for me and what I believe?
“Heyy! I am Alonee Gray born and raised on the Eastside of Columbus.
I am currently a senior at THE Ohio State University! I will be graduating December 2011. How I arrived to this point in my life is from the support of my family. They have helped guide me to take advantage of the best educational opportunities possible. This will be my second degree. I have also graduated from DeVry University in with an associate’s degree in Network Systems Administration. Education is vital in survival. And it’s best to be well rounded. My family has me helped me see the importance in that. They have also encouraged me to do my best despite the circumstances and obstacles. My dad tells me all the time “Adversity builds character.” This helps me remember that every challenge is helping me to become a stronger person and maintain humility.”
What do you have planned for your future?
“Every day I contemplate the future, dreaming of all the paths I could travel, of all the lives I could live. I want to see the world, hear people’s stories and soak up every learning experience there is to offer. I believe no one is really set within one career for their whole life. The path I’m currently traveling is the one of preparation for grad school. I’m planning and preparing to off to Occupational Therapy school and becoming a successful OT. I’m looking forward to the experiences I will encounter in this new chapter of my life.”
How do you keep a positive attitude?
“Living positively can be very difficult especially when things don’t go as planned or perceived. How I maintain my positivity is just by basking in the sunlight. Literally. I love going to the park. It’s a healthy way for me relax and reflect. Also, it’s easier for me to positive for others, which helps me to be positive for myself. I enjoy volunteering and being a help to my friends. I volunteer often, for anything and everything that has a positive message or helping those in need. I love being around kids. I work at OSU Childcare Center and I look forward to going to work every day. Their smiles and innocence help me forget about all my worries and strive for more. I am also a mentor for College Mentors. In this program we educate children about higher education . To expose these children to experiences they wouldn’t receive elsewhere, and see their eagerness to learn and excitement, keeps me hungry for my success. Even though the children are OUR future, we help mold THEIR future.
I’m just a fun loving, open minded, supportive person, down for the cause. I enjoy long walks on the beach and Kripsy Kreme Doughnuts.”
“It’s not about me it’s about the shirt”-Jola
Jola is a very talented 22 year old recording artist from Dayton Ohio. He currently spends a lot of his time recording hits (which are soon to be heard) in Atlanta and traveling the country. Jola is extremely dedicated to his music and movement. Unlike many other rappers, he does not glorify drugs, violence, or impoverished living. Many rappers are from the suburbs but afraid to admit it, jola proudly boasts where he comes from. He created the “iRep The Trunk” movement http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nS8McpQunaM&feature=fvwrel . As said in the video the “Trunk” (suburbs) is basically the opposite of the “Hood” (Inner City). With his music he tries to promote fun, enlighten, and inspire others to better themselves. One of my favorite songs of his is “Potential”http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5c3iSpFueQ&feature=related . He and his music are very versatile and creative. Above his growing popularity and soon to be Stardom I appreciate Jola’s confidence in his abilities and dreams, his work ethic, his dedication, his creativity, his fearlessness, his intelligence, and his overall vision to become great.

“I was born in Riverside, California, but moved to Dayton Ohio when I was 6. I am currently in my fourth year at the University of Dayton majoring in History and receiving my minor in communications. I plan to teach high school history. I want to be a high school teacher because I want to be able to encourage teenagers to be anything they want and to think for themselves. I work with inner city children and teenagers who live in the projects of Dayton on Saturday mornings through my church and I want to teach them that no matter where they come from they can achieve anything with God’s help. Frederick Douglass stated, “If there is no struggle, there is no progress”. I believe that one of the greatest goals I can set for myself is to live a life that I can be proud of and that my family can be proud of. A life in which I can look back on and know without a doubt I made a difference in a least one person’s life.” -Alexis.
Ron Anderson
“My name is Ron Anderson and I’m from the Westwood neighborhood in Dayton, OH. Today, I live in Peachtree City, GA (suburb of Atlanta) with my wife and two teenagers. I’m an I.T. Manager at a Solar Energy Company. I’m proud to be from the west side of Dayton because it made me into the person I am today. My old neighborhood was tough just like any inner city neighborhood in America but I knew I didn’t want to stay there all my life. Getting out is not easy but sometimes in life you have to step out of your comfort zone. Regardless I believe getting an education is the key. I didn’t go to a traditional college instead I went to a Technical school to get my first degree and worked like heck to be better than the other people who did. I used my company’s tuition reimbursement programs to get my advanced degrees (two master’s degrees) which made me more marketable. My advice to young people is to get an education beyond high school period. Not everyone can go to a traditional college but get what you can to get started to get that first job. The first job may not be the one you want but it will lead to better ones later.”
-GREAT words of wisdom from Ron. We’re all here to learn from each other. #TIOBS.
Ian Blake
-Ian was born in Dayton, OH and raised in Trotwood, OH a suburb of Dayton. He graduated from the Dayton Early College Academy (DECA), and is now a 3rd year student at Miami University as an American Studies major and Management Information Systems minor. He is a Fall 2010 initiate of the Delta Upsilon chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc, where he serves as the Director of Fraternal Activities. Five years from now, Ian would like to be the owner of his own sneaker boutique that establishes itself empowering the community through service and charity. Aside from cutting hair and collecting sneakers, he is also involved as an executive member in the Black Student Action Association and is actively involved in campus diversity recruitment programs including Made@Miami, Bridges Program for Excellence, and the Diversity Overnight Program for admitted students of color. He strives to be a better person everyday, and strongly believes in the phrase, ‘paying it forward’.
“I feel that giving back in respect to those who have paved the way is our responsibility. Some get so caught up in the worlds ills that they forget to be good people.” -Ian
-What is something that makes you different from others?
“I am no different than anyone else with any type of dream and ambition. I feel as if my pride and extreme competitiveness are my gift and curse. They have lead to a lot of my “success” but they are also at the center of a lot of things that I may not be proud of. I don’t really know how to answer this question other than “perception is reality”. I wear my heart on my sleeve… (whatever that means). Other than that I am truly just living, pedaling downhill… trying to leave signs of an impact for my family.”
-Lastly, anything you would like to add about yourself or any message you want to get out to the public?
“I like to believe that I am modern day philosophical, but maybe that is because i believe that I am good at everything, but if I could leave everyone with one thing it would be that “perception is reality”. This isn’t a new quote, I’ve actually heard it maybe dozens of times in my life, but it is one of the most relative statements in the world. Always carry yourself in the highest esteem. As cliche’ as it may sound, you never know who is watching. I wouldn’t be where I am if it wasn’t for the relationships I built over the years and because I have always been able to balance my priorities. I know people who are smarter, more athletic and more business savvy, but are in worse positions because they never understood how to carry themselves in every area of life. I could put on a business suit and conduct myself in a board meeting, then go outside and throw on a jump suit and connect with people in the hood all because I understand the importance of people’s perception on my image. Contrary to popular belief, only God reserves the right for ultimate judgement, but people will judge you every day. Unfortunately, a lot of opportunities will be missed if they see you through the wrong light. Secondly, believe in yourself, believe in your dreams and trust in Jesus. Word up. This was a fun interview, I wish I liked to type b/c i would drop all types of gems on you all… but since i don’t, you will have to buy my book one day. LOL

Dionte J. Johnson
-Where are you from? Raised?
“I am from Columbus, Ohio. More specifically the east side of the city. I was collaboratively raise on the south and east sides of the city, and seeing how people do not leave their sides of town too often around here, I don’t believe that I ever went up north as a youth other than to Northland mall with my mom. I just want to warn everyone, I am a bit of a scatterbrain so this interview might end up all over the place, but stick with me.”
-What do you do now? How did you get to this point?
“What do I do now?.. Hmm. Even though I try to mix in a little bit of everything I must say that my center revolves around two things; creative expression and helping our youth. I am a full time business owner and I just want to get this out there, ownership is VERY difficult, but we need more young motivated black males to step up and want to be something other than an entertainer. (Now that I got that sidebar out of the way). I own an one-of-a kind sneaker boutique in the Short North district of Columbus, Ohio, I also began the brand that you all may or may not have heard of yet by the name of Kingsrowe. My side hustle and major passion is creative execution, which is a made up name that I just created to categorize anything related to design, layout, execution or production. I love the creative process on all levels, from a barely visible tonal pattern on a worn couch cushion to the special effects of a major motion picture. i do everything from video production to party flyers to logos. One of my most prized achievements has been to be able to complete two projects for Proctor & Gamble. I recently began my random career as a football coach and have even been blessed to commentate the state High School championship games. There is a long story that leads into why I decided to become a coach, but I will sum it up in a few phrases; I used to play, I missed the game, I love the game, I have a lot of wisdom to pass on, I love helping kids. And there you have it, all of my hustles.. in a nutshell.”
-What do you plan on doing in the future? Ambitions, dreams, goals…etc.?
“I have so many dreams that I it would be unfair to try to list them because I know I will leave one out. My goal is to create an identity for Columbus beyond just The Ohio State University. Not saying there is anything wrong with the University, it actually quite the opposite, I believe that the University is so great that it overshadows everything else that makes up the great state of Ohio and more importantly its heart, Columbus. I cannot necessarily discuss my future plans, but just know that I live by a series of mottos, one major motto being “I will not be outworked”… there is always more to come.”
-What is Kingsrowe?
“It is funny that you ask this because i was just asking myself the same question yesterday. I believe that the beautiful thing about this brand that we’ve created is that it evolves everyday. People use the term “lifestyle brand” too loosely these days and they try to mimic something that they see or hear about. We are just taking this thing one day at a time and having fun doing it. Kingsrowe is whatever we say it is, but whatever that “it is” may be at the time, just know that it represents Columbus in every way.”

Tell us a little about yourself? (where you’re from, how was life growing up…etc.)
“First things first my name is Kelley Snyder. I was born and raised right outside of Columbus in the BEST suburb of the city, Westerville, OH. I grew up with my Mom, older brother, and my Aunt. I’ve been very blessed to grow up with so much love in my house. My family has always been very very supportive of everything I’ve ever pursued. I was told at a young age that I was capable of anything my mind could imagine, and I truly think that has a lot to do with how open minded and determined I am. I was taught to treat people with respect, and give everyone a fair chance no matter what they looked like or where they came from. I’m extremely thankful that I was brought up this was, because it has given me a chance to befriend and meet people from all walks of life. My family loved to travel and I’ve been to so many amazing places all around the world. I have had some crazy adventures that I’m grateful to have experienced. I think meeting people from all over the globe has given me a view of how many different kinds of people there are in the world, and how much we can learn from them, and teach them.
My life changed a lot my senior year of high school. My family went through a lot of changes and situations that forced me to grow up a lot faster than I was ready to. I got thrown into the “real world” and I was forced to mature at a rapid rate. I had to figure things out by myself for the first time, which was harder than I thought it would be. I’ve become so much stronger of a person, and through the support of my amazing mother, older brother, and close friends, I’ve come to understand life a little better. The past 4 years have completely changed the person I am today, which to me proves that everything, even hard times, happen for a reason. I’m so blessed for all the experiences, good and bad that I have been through in my life, and I’m only looking forward to the amazing life I have ahead of me.”
What do you do now?
“I’m what some call a “jack of all trades”. I have always had a lot on my plate, I think because I’m the type of person who likes to help anyone if I am cable of helping them. Right now I am working at a salon in the short north (Strand Cafe) as an Esthetician and Make-Up artist. Along with that I work at a promotional products company in Gahanna, and an italian restaurant in Upper Arlington called Carsonie’s. I also manage a rap group from Columbus called C-Zoo. I’m also a freelance make-up artist picking up gigs like photo shoots, weddings, and music videos whenever I can. I guess you could say I like to be busy. It sometimes feels overwhelming, but I never, ever get bored.”
…What do you see for your future…goals and ambitions?
“I’m planning to move to New York City because I need to experience something new and exciting. I want to start a PR type of company that helps all types of creative minded people make it to the top of their industry. This includes designers, artists, musicians, models, etc. I have a lot of talented friends, and I feel like I can utilize my creativity and networking skills to make sure they are successful in whatever they want to pursue. I want to be able to have an impact on people with big dreams who feel as if they don’t have the means to succeed. There are many people who have goals and don’t pursue them, because they feel like they won’t achieve it. I thrive to give these people hope and help them in any way capable, because what the world needs is people who have an idea and aren’t afraid to make it reality. If everyone went after their dreams instead of conforming to what “society” thinks they should do, they would be happier, and in my opinion, more successful people. There is so much pressure put on individuals growing up that in order to be successful you have to do A, B, and C. I want to help these people realize that they can be whoever they set their minds to be, even if it’s not the normal path someone in our country takes.”
What made you want to get involved with TIOBS?
“TIOBS is such an amazing movement. It’s principles are somewhat of the same ideas I already felt were important in promoting to the world. I was so excited when I got involved, knowing that instead of just one voice, a group of voices would be more powerful. I know that TIOBS will be a movement that proceeds anyone’s ideas of how far it could go. We have a great team, and great ideas, that will push this idea farther and farther. I feel like TIOBS was a great fit for myself, because I’m really just trying to affect others’ lives, and help people realize how important THEY can be in the world.”
Any last words you want to leave people with?
“Life with passion and dreams, is life without limits.” I love these words so much because I really think they are the truth. If you have a dream, and you are passionate enough about it to push through the hard times, you have NO limits to what you can achieve. Living life without limits is exactly how everyone should live. You can be anything you want to be, ANYTHING. Everyone needs to remember that nobody controls your life except yourself. If you want to make something happen, then make it happen. Remembering to live life with both passion and dreams, will certainly make sure you live a life filled with happiness.”
Tell us a little about yourself:
“I was born and raised in Cleveland, OH. Grew up on Kinsman raised by my 2 older sisters and my mother. With no father figure in my life, I was forced to grow up faster than others and on my own in a sense. Sports were an outlet from the streets to me. Seeing people close to me get killed and go to prison due to the streets just made me want to do something with my life. Zelma George, better known as Woodhill, I can honestly say made me the athlete I am today and gave me the mentality I have. I started playing sports around the age of 8 and played every single sport possible. As I started to get older, I focused on basketball and football. So I became really good at both and through high school got all state honors. I owe everything to my sisters and mother for raising me the right way and keeping me out the streets. I come from a place where people just tear one another down. I just want to see people do better.”
What do you do now?
“Right now, I’m preparing to to graduate from the University of Rio Grande on Dec. 8th. I am a triple major, Business Management/Marketing/Sports Management. I also play semi pro basketball right now here in Ohio, headed overseas next summer to Europe to play pro. My goals in life are to be a success, inspire others, and to live my life through the Lord.”
How do you stay focused on your goals?
“Me, I stay focused by the people around me supporting and as crazy as it sounds, seeing others fail. Yeah it sounds bad, but by me seeing people fail, it pushes me to push myself harder. Also there’s a guy names Eric Thomas, a life coach. I watch his video “How Bad Do You Want Success” each and everyday and it motivates me.”
What about TIOBS caught your interest?
“I was really drawn to TIOBS because the message that is stands for is the way I been living my whole life. Also with the way it brings people together for something positive, it a great sight to see. That is very rare in our generation.”
Any last words?
“If people don’t remember me for anything else, I just want them to think of me say, “That guy inspired me to do better.”“
Thanks a lot for taking to the talk with us! - TIOBS®
Tell us a little about yourself?
”-My name is Brad Cubbie. I was born and raised in DAYTON OHIO…I didn’t quite grow up in one of the nicest neighborhoods around. I came up in what the people around my area called, “Da View”. Da View was probably one of the roughest neighborhoods around when I was growing up. I was exposed to a lot at a young age. Hearing gun shots and seeing crackheads walk the streets was a normal thing for me. Police chases, drug busts, and even seeing people getting shot at wasn’t really out of the norm either. I didn’t have a choice but to grow up fast. By the time I was 16 I had seen just about everything you could imagine, and by that time a lot of my friends had joined the “Block” because it was all they knew. But even though the hood raised me, it didn’t shape me…I was always an A+ student, and my love for basketball made sure I would remain that way all the way through High School. I had two options, stay in the hood or do something that could get me out of the hood, so I decided to make basketball my Ticket out! The everyday things around fueled me to do something better with my Life. I always knew I was going to College, but I also knew that it would be pretty hard for my mom to pay for it. So when I was 17 I promised her I’d get a full-ride scholarship for basketball. I decided to go to Trotwood for High School because I knew way too many people at all the local public schools, and I knew I wasn’t going to be able to focus Like I wanted to. Trotwood was the perfect fit for me. And after a successful basketball career there, I was able to keep my promise to my mother and by the end of my senior year I received a full-ride scholarship to The University of Rio Grande.”
What do you do now? …What do you see for your future…goals and ambitions?
”-I am now a student-athlete at the University of Rio Grande. I started off majoring in Early childhood Education, but now I’m majoring in Social Work. I decided to change my major because I love kids, but I have a passion for helping people as well. I see myself working in urban schools bettering troubled kids in the future. My goals and ambitious in life are pretty simple…I just want to live a comfortable life and be successful with whatever I do. I dream of the “American Dream” like most of us do. I want a wife and kids, with the house and the white picket fence. At the end of the day I just want to be able to provide for my family, and make sure they want for nothing!”
What made you want to get involved with TIOBS?
“-I jumped on board as soon as the opportunity presented itself to me to not only be involved with TIOBS, but to be a part of the team. The main reason I wanted to be involved is because there are not a lot of young POSITIVE role models around these days. Yea, you have your rappers and ball players, But what about the people that are just like you and me??…I felt that TIOBS was an opportunity for me be a part of something that represented today’s youth in a different and positive way. I felt like all my life I’ve been living for what the “IDEA” stands for. I was always a natural leader, and I was never afraid to be different. Im PROUD to say that I’m a part of TIOBS, I truly believe this thing can be something BIG!!!”
Any last words you want to leave people with?
“-Life is what YOU make it! Not your mother, your father, or even that ex that you thought would be there forever! Everyday God gives you; become wiser! So be smarter than yesterday and even better tomorrow. Whatever you decide YOU want to do in life, DO IT!! I know we all heard it before, but if you really put you mind, heart, and effort into something you can be or do whatever you desire. It’s NEVER too late and its only over when YOU give up!…Just some words of encouragement…THANKS for reading! - @Bcube40”
